Pirogue 460 / 15’
15' x 7.5' &€“ 130 Lbs.
Sail area 5.15 m² / 56 Sq.Ft.
This project start has a request from a college teacher to create an outrigger canoe for teenagers, based on the local traditional boats of Mayotte Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean.

Cutting large trees is now forbidden due to deforestation, this cheap project need to be as much as possible made of plywood. All kind of outrigger canoes are documented in Admiral Paris inventory published in 1841.

I start by making a 3D scan of an existent boat, from a bunch of pictures taken on the local beach. By cutting the shape hull, basic lines where extracted. This was my guidelines for the plywood hull, a simple shape with style and authenticity.

All parts are made of plywood, except beams and mast. Stich and glue building on light frames and bulkheads. CE classification D3.

4 sheets of 6 to 9 mm /€“ 1/4 or 3/8 ACX plywood.

The plans detail all the parts and panels dimension, the parts nesting on plywood sheets, the bermudian rig and sail, fiberglass, temporary jig, and a complete building sequence in 3D.
