The Jiffy V-22 is the result of the many requests I have had from builders who liked the character and appearance of the Jiffy 22, but who needed a soft riding hull for more exposed waters.

Construction follows the same girder method that I used for the Jack Tar. In this method the hull is built upside down over a series of bulkheads and temporary frames. Two fore and aft girders each side slot into these and tie them together. The plywood bottom planking is glued and screwed or nailed to the girders, and to the keel, chines, and bulkheads. The result is a very strong, light hull, with the strength concentrated where it is most needed, in the bottom. The absence of framing elsewhere helps make the most of the accommodation space in the cuddy cabin.

THE PLANS

The plans include six large sheets of drawings, showing the hull at various stages of construction, full size details, cabin layout, and other information. Full size patterns, printed on Mylar, show the stem, transom, bulkheads, building frames, girders, and other items. Also included is an illustrated building manual, which takes you step by step through the building process. It includes specifications, a list of materials, sources for marine plywood, and other information.

The Jiffy V-22 is designed for outboard motors in the 65 - 115 HP range. Materials needed consist principally of 42 - 8' x 4' sheets of marine plywood (thickness 1/2" - 3/4"), 700 board feet of lumber, epoxy resin and fillers, stainless steel screws, and bronze boat nails. Basic woodworking tools are needed, including a table saw and band saw. The Jiffy V-22 is a suitable project for the builder with some woodworking experience.

Robert Mason, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, started building his boat in August 2007. He launched her in March of 2008. He reports a top speed of 35 mph with a 115HP Yamaha, cruising at 25 mph. This Jiffy V-22 was built by David Taylor of Crownsville, MD. David made some minor changes to the windshield and cockpit coaming -- they seem to be very much in keeping with the appearance of the boat. He reports that he gets 35 mph with a 100 HP four stroke Yamaha outboard, burning about 8 gallons of fuel in a day's running. He has obviously done a great job of building his boat, and can be very proud of the result. He reports that the boat "turned out great!"
