Wingmaran 14 V3
The Wingmaran 14 is the culmination of 5 years of R&D and 3 seasons of testing to produce a light and fast sailboat for 1 or 2 that has the speed of a multihull without the complexity, weight and cost.
The Wingmaran was invented in the late 1987’s by my father, Martti Palmquist as a fast sailboat that would match the speed of a multihull but would be able to resist capsizing and pitchpoling better than a typical beach cat. My father took a 16’ beach cat, removed 1 hull and added a transverse wing and was able to increase his top speed by 18%, hitting 24 mph. A Hobie 16 can reach this speed, however, the beach cat is much more susceptible to tripping and flipping.
Below hydroplaning speeds, it is more efficient to displace water, however, once a boat reaches hydroplaning speeds, it is more efficient to ride on top of the water. Because the skimmer is set at the ideal angle of incline for producing the highest lift to drag ratio, and because the skimmer is positioned in front of and to the lee of the center of effort of the sail, it is able to produce more lift as the speed increases due to dynamic pressure. This causes the main hull to also partially lift out of the water, reducing drag. The boat accelerates noticeably once hydroplaning speed is reached around 7 knots. When traveling below hydroplaning speeds, the wings are above the water not producing drag.
So the Wingmaran 14 has a distinct advantage over a monohull at high wind speeds and an advantage over a trimaran at low wind speeds.
The Wingmaran 14 is capable of reaching speeds over 13-14 mph downwind, 11-12 mph on a beam reach and 9-10 mph upwind. The Wingmaran sails best in wave conditions less than 0.5M, but it still does fine in 1 Meter waves.
In 3 seasons of testing, I have never capsized, however, I have performed capsize tests and the boat can be self-righted by stepping on the dagger board and leaning backwards. It only takes 30 seconds or so to flip upright. The low volume skimmers don’t create turtle recovery issues like a large float trimaran.
Features:
- Dual skimming wing amas connected to the hull with a single crossbar forward of rowing oars.
 - A 5 degree backwards canted mast for better downwind lift.
 - 2 dagger slots to accommodate different sail rigs.
 - In shallow water, you can install 2 shorter boards to give the boat a 12" or 6" draft.
 - A shallow V scow hull with a self-draining cockpit.
 - Hiking benches
 - Rowing station
 - Designed to accommodate Sunfish, Laser, and Force 5 board boat sail rigs (unstayed).
 - Includes plans for a high aspect ratio, reefable balanced lug sail
 - Both open and closed gear storage areas for multi-day expedition sailing.
