Description

If you enjoy rowing and need a boat which can be built quickly, doesn't cost much, and is easy for transportation and storage then this tiny vessel might be for you. "Mighty Mouse" is the adult version of our one sheet mini punt "Mickey Mouse". The design features a more streamlined hull for better speed, higher free board for increased load capacity and reserved buoyancy. There are emergency flotation (storage) compartments in the front and back. The boat is symmetrical in reference to amidship which facilitates construction even more. Building method is stitch-and-glue. The separate panels of the hull get stitched up with copper wire (or zip ties) and then "welded" by epoxy and fiberglass tape. Instructions describe in detail every step of the process with a lot of photos. All parts of the boat can fit on one and a half sheets of 1/4"(6mm) exterior grade plywood. In other words, two friends can buy 3 sheets of plywood and build 2 boats. Nesting drawing is provided too for best use of material. The finished hull weighs around 35 lbs(16kg). Propulsion is by oars. The boat is tender and care must be taken when boarding. Once seated though she gets more stable with a certain amount of secondary stability similar to dories. The seat is comfortable with a backrest (unlike most other rowboats) and the rear bulkhead serves as a perfect foot brace. When testing the prototype I manged to stand up in the boat but wouldn't do it regularly. Once under way this little shell is really fast and lively. Included are drawings for a removable seat and oars. With her narrow beam the boat is ideal for car topping and can be easily transported by one person from the car to the water and back.

Here is the bill of materials required:

  • Exterior grade plywood 4x8' (1220x2440 mm), ¼" (6 mm) thick - 1.5 sheets
  • Fiberglass tape 3"(75 mm) wide by 6 oz.(200 gr/sq.m) - 16 yards(15 m)
  • Epoxy resin - 1 gallon (3.78L) plus hardener;
  • Others - bread flour, chip brushes, rollers, fairing compound or filler, gloves, primer, paint, sandpaper;
