Description
Multi-purpose, can be rowed, motored or sailed and is light enough for one person to lift on and off the family car or yacht.
Simple stitch and glue construction, it can be built with the minimum of tools, no previous boatbuilding experience and in very little space.
Step-by-step instructions included in plywood plans.
Can be the ideal quality time project for a youngster with Dad's assistance or Dad with Junior's help.
Build as a school project which actually has some use after achieving your passing grade.
Practical winter project, build one for fishing on your local pond, as junior's "my boat" or as a tender to your big boat.
Built-in flotation compartments and a simple sail plan make them great for learning to sail, whatever your age.
The DIXI DINGHY, was commissioned as a sailing yacht tender for very simple construction in stitch and glue plywood. As a rowing/powered boat, all hull panels can be cut from two sheets of 6mm (1/4") plywood, including forming bouyancy compartments fore and aft. Additional plywood is required to make up the rudder and daggerboard. The rig is free standing, supported at keel and bow thwart and is easily stepped. The mast is in two interlocking pieces and the sail is sleeve luffed and loose footed. All rig parts stow within the hull.
As a sailing fun boat she is highly manoeuvreable and nippy with an adult or two children. As a tender she will comfortably carry four adults and gear in calm water. Load capacity will vary with water conditions.
Hull section
Plan shape of Dixi Dinghy. Argie 10 is similar, except for size
Plans include fully dimensioned panel cutting diagrams, hull sections, construction details, sail plan, spar details, building instructions and materials list. Construction for both is very simple. It is not even necessary to construct stocks over which to build them and they are turned into whichever position is most convenient for the operation which is in progress at the time.
Finished hull weight is 22kg (48lb) for the DIXI DINGHY. If you want a larger dinghy of stitch-and-glue construction, look at the Argie 15. If you are looking for a more challenging project, see the Challenger 13 lapstrake dinghy.
