The Walrus Bay
A Greenland style kayak for kids
12’ x 19” / 3.66m x 48cm
Maximum recommended capacity 130lbs / 59kgs
Weight is approximately 17lbs / 8kgs
Larger than the Kidyak, the Walrus Bay is designed for bigger kids and small adults. She, too, is a scaled down version of traditional West Greenland qajaqs, but a bit more sophisticated in shape than the Kidyak. She is quick, easy, and very inexpensive to build.
This is a great parent/child project, and your kids can do a lot of the work. Decorating the skin is easy and fun, too, and add a personal touch to this unique project. Minus paint drying, building this little boat could take just a long weekend. Or a casual week, working evenings and putting in some time on the weekend.
To build, she will need a 2’x3’/ 635x914mm piece of marine or MDO plywood, some clear cedar boards, a length of fabric, some stainless steel (inox) screws, epoxy and a quart/liter of paint or varnish. Full details are well covered in the guide.
Though a woodworking shop full of tools would be ideal, the Walrus Bay can be built with just a drill, a jigsaw and a few hand tools. I have built many boats with just that, and so can you.
Tools, materials, safety, a user’s guide, paddle building directions and well illustrated step by step building instructions are included in the construction guide. The instructions are geared towards the first-time builder, and everything you need to know is there. Plans also come with full size patterns for the frames, stems and mounting brackets – no lofting or guesswork required.
